E.H. Richardson was the founder of Adelanto CA in 1915. Hailing from Milwaukee, WI then Ontario CA, Richardson was an accomplished inventor, electrifying many common household appliances we use today, notably the Hotpoint electric iron. Richardson sold his patent for the Hotpoint electric iron to GE and bought the lands that will become Adelanto. Richardson planted and grew orchards of pears and other fruit bearing trees on his ranch. His vision for Adelanto was to be the major fruit grower in the region. Richardson put lots of energy and funds into the town including funding the water pumping station. This ambitious project earned the city to be named “Adelanto,” (adelante/adelanto aka moving forward.) Unfortunately, his dreams for the orchards didn’t materialize due to war times and disease that had plagued the orchards, killing the trees. Richardson was offered a new opportunity back east in the 1920s, but he chose to stay in California, not wanting to leave Adelanto and Ontario.
