A Local Champion and Old Town Victorville Legend

This mural pays respect to Jose Felix Diaz, a proud and active Victorville community member. Diaz served as an educator for 46 years, a city council member, California Cadet Commandant, Army veteran, and veteran advocate. He founded the Felix G. Diaz Mariachi Music Festival in 2015 and was deeply involved in the nonprofit Los Dorados del Valle Charro Group, which raised scholarship funds for Latinx students to attend Victor Valley College.
The mural will depict scenes from Diaz’s life, including his efforts to challenge segregation norms, his dedication to education, and his pride in his Mexican heritage and military service. Butterflies in the mural symbolize life, growth, and transformation, reflecting Diaz’s significant impact on the community.
A Community Mural Project
Celebrating the sport basketball and coaches Aaron Alston and Charlie Fore.
Coach Aaron Alston is a home-grown Hesperia Hero. He played basketball throughout his life, playing for Hesperia High School all the way up to Cal State LA and the Drew League. Today he gives back to his community, honoring his roots coaching basketball in Hesperia. He formed the A2RPD teaching youth court and off court life skills. His dedication earned him the title of USA Basketball Gold Certified Coach.
The late Coach Charlie was a major staple in Hesperia basketball. His coaching theory was fast and aimed for shooting 100 times a game. The goal was to make half of the shots, by doing this, the team would average 100 points! He coached for many years under Hesperia Recreation and Parks district and was also a Vietnam veteran and rodeo cowboy in his youth. Fun fact: Charlie was a radio disc jockey for KCIN and KATJ under the name of “Cheyenne Charlie!”
This mural was the second mural of a two mural location series for “Create Together,” a four-day art event organized and sponsored by non-profit, Lifting Our Stories. In partnership with the Arts Connection San Bernardino, ROOT Victorville, HD Family Nights, and the California Arts Council.
In this project, I was the designer and muralist. I’ve created the design through feedback from Hesperia Park and Recreation and approved by its board.
During a two-day event, we invited community members to participate in painting.
I’ve finished the installation which included finishing, details, and cleaning up the mural to bring it to a professional level.
This project is funded in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency and Creative Corps Inland SoCal Grant..
